Acne

Anyone suffering from Acne will know that the impact of this condition is more than skin deep. Affecting self-confidence, self-esteem and our willingness to participate fully in day-to-day life.

Often remaining medically untreated and tolerated, miserably, as one of life's inconveniences, acne can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. As a long-lasting, painful and distressing condition. Affecting not only adolescents, but also mature adults in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

Characterized by pimples, cysts and abscesses. Acne occurs when the pores in the skin are blocked, trapping oil, dead skin and bacteria in the hair follicles causing the formation of a blackhead. Which can then become further infected and result in a variety of acne lesions.

Causes can be attributed to many things. Including genetics, increased stress, hormone imbalance, poor dietary habits, food allergies, poor bowel function and sensitivity to skin care products or certain medications.

At IYAC, we use a wide range of methods to successfully treat acne. Ranging from prescribed medication to aesthetic treatments and facials.

Types of Acne Lesions

Comedones

Comedones

• Open comedones (blackheads)
These are dilated hair follicles that are filled with sebum, dead cells and bacteria. The black appearance is caused by oxidation, not dirt.

• Closed comedones (whiteheads)
These form when skin cells and oil completely block the opening of a hair follicle, usually after a blackhead has formed.

Nodules

Nodules

These are solid inflamed lesions that extend deep into the skin, sometimes causing tissue damage and scarring if not treated.

Nodular acne, which can be painful, is the most severe form of the disease.

Papules

Papules

This type of whitehead (5 mm or less) is one that has become swollen, red and inflamed.

Cysts

Cysts

These sac-like lesions contain white blood cells, bacteria and dead cells in a liquid or semi-liquid state.

They can result in scarring, and may be very painful and severely inflamed.

Cysts and nodules often appear together to form nodulocystic acne, also very severe.

Pustule

Pustules

This whitehead is pus-filled and inflamed. Once they rupture into the skin, they form pustular heads.
