BOTOX®

What is Botox?

Botox is a natural, purified protein that relaxes the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. It is a safe and simple method to reduce wrinkles, smooth fine lines, and softly contour the jaw line while providing a fresher, more youthful overall look. Botox is one of the most popular rejuvenation techniques on the market today.

How does it work?

We use our facial muscles to speak, eat, and communicate emotion on a daily basis. Overtime, wrinkles tend to form in the areas that we utilize most often, such as frown lines on the forehead, smile lines on the cheeks and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox relaxes the facial muscles that lie beneath these areas, causing the lines to gradually smooth out while simultaneously preventing new lines from forming.

What areas can be treated?

  • Face:
primarily used to eliminate the wrinkles on the forehead, brow area and around the eyes
  • Face shape:
provides a slimmer, more feminine jaw line by reducing the size of the jaw muscles, making them appear less prominent
  • Neck:
reduces horizontal and vertical lines in the neck
  • Underarms:
decreases sweat and smell associated with hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, of the armpits by blocking the chemical that signals the body to perspire

How is it administered? Is it painful?

A small amount of Botox is directly injected into select muscles using a very fine needle. Generally, the treatment takes about ten minutes. Most patients report feeling a quick sting but discomfort is minimal and brief. Anaesthetic cream can be used to reduce any discomfort.

How long do the results last?

After an injection, it takes approximately 3 to 7 days for Botox to take effect. The full results last between 3 to 6 months before lines slowly begin to return. It usually takes longer for the results of jaw remodeling to take effect, however, these results last for up to 8 months. After repeated Botox treatments, the treated muscles tend to atrophy so the effects tend to last longer.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is US F.D.A. approved and has been widely tested and used safely for many years in over 20 countries around the world.  Side effects are very rare, but some people may experience temporary headaches or bruising/redness at the injection site. There is no downtime, and normal daily activities can be resumed immediately.

Who should not get Botox treatments?

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Botox. Also, Botox may not be suitable for patients with conditions that affect muscle activity, such as Bell’s Palsy.

Intradermal BOTOX®

What is it?

Intradermal Botox is a diluted form of Botox that is injected into the skin to control pore size.

How does it work?

The effect of Botox injected directly into the skin contracts the skin's pores. When the pores reduce in size, the surface area of the skin is tightened, creating a lifting effect that lasts for months. Thus, a non-surgical “facelift” effect is achieved. Additionally, injecting Intradermal Botox into the lower part of the face close to the jaw-line cancels some of the downward pull of the platysmus muscle, conveying a lifting effect to the cheeks and jowls.

What are the benefits?

  • Reduces pore size
  • Reduces oiliness and controls the inflammation of acne
  • Provides even-colored texture to the skin and a refined, powered look
  • Lifts the overall face
  • Targets fine lines in areas once thought to be off limits to Botox, e.g. below the eyes

How is it different from conventional Botox?

While conventional Botox targets the muscles used in facial expression, Intradermal Botox aims to control the condition of the skin itself.

Intradermal Botox is administered in the same manner - though a series of small injections, and the side effects and risks are minimal.

Summary:

  • Botox relaxes the muscles in the face that cause skin to crease and wrinkle and can effectively contour the jaw line.
  • Intradermal Botox reduces pore size and provides a tighter, lifted face with a smoother complexion.
