Radiofrequency (RF) for skin tightening

Radiofrequency is a popular method for the non-surgical and painless tightening of the early signs of loose or sagging skin. Radiofrequency is commonly used to treat the forehead, under the eyes, cheeks, mid-face, jaw line, and the neck. It is ideal for both men & women in their mid thirties to fifties, who don’t want to undergo a surgical face lift.

IYAC offers the latest new-generation RF treatments to cater to a wide range of skin types.

How Radiofrequency (RF) works?

RF uses electrical energy to heat the deep layers of the skin, whilst protecting the outer layer. Heating in this area, without damaging the outer layers of skin, causes microscopic changes to the tissues and collagen contraction, with subsequent collagen remodelling over the months that pass. Treatments are comfortable, have no healing time and give immediate results. You are able to resume all your usual activities straight after. A series of treatments is usually required for optimal results.

How safe is Radiofrequency (RF) for skin tightening?

RF technology has been used in medicine (surgery) for over 30 years for haemostasis (blood coagulation) and tissue ablation (electrosurgery). More recently it has been applied as a means of shrinking lax connective tissues through collagen denaturation. RF is a clinically proven and safe treatment technology. There are rarely any side effects, but some patients may experience a mild redness that subsides 1-2 hours after the treatment.

What kind of results can I expect from Radiofrequency (RF) treatments for skin tightening?

Immediately following the treatment, your skin will feel tighter, with more tightening improvements appearing gradually over the months after treatment. Radiofrequency can also be used to enhance a variety of treatments including IPL & laser skin rejuvenation and acne treatment.

If there is a significant amount of redundant or sagging skin, often seen in older patients over sixty, combining RF treatments with Botox and Filler treatments, or a surgical face-lift to remove the excess skin, are other options to achieve a better result.

How many Radiofrequency (RF) treatments will I need?

Depending on the device being used, it is recommended to have a session every 1-3 weeks with an average of 6 sessions in a treatment program. Dr Yeoh will be able to determine a course of treatments specific to your needs.

How long does each treatment session last?

Each treatment session is about 60-90 minutes for the face and neck. This includes microdermabrasion, 30-45 minutes of the Radiofrequency treatment, followed by a BioCellulose Mask for hydration and nourishment. Finish off with a Gentlewaves®LED treatment to improve the skin’s healing process.

Am I suitable for Radiofrequency (RF) treatments? If so, which RF treatment is right for me?

Radiofrequency addresses the following concerns:
  • Droopy eyelids/looking tired
  • Flattening of the cheeks
  • Lines from nose to mouth (nasolabial folds)
  • Lines causing corners of the mouth to turn down (marionette lines)
  • Loosening jaw line (jowls)
  • Double chin
  • Loose neck

Radiofrequency is used to tighten the skin and stimulate collagen production, and is best suited to patients with mild to moderate sagging of facial tissues, usually those in their mid thirties to fifties, with any skin colour. Depending on your individual condition, Dr Yeoh will determine which RF treatment is best suited for you:

Are Radiofrequency (RF) treatments painful?

RF treatments are generally comfortable and relaxing. This is one of the reasons for its popularity.

What is the difference between Radiofrequency (RF) and Laser/IPL?

Firstly, RF works by heating up the deeper layers without damaging the skin’s surface, and is meant for skin tightening. Laser and IPL work in the upper layers of the skin and is meant for more superficial skin issues such as pigmentation, acne, spider veins, tone and texture.

Secondly, RF treatments are suitable for all skin colors, including dark and pigmented skin. Unlike lasers and IPL, RF energy is “color blind” meaning that it has no affinity to skin pigmentation, such as melanin.

Who is not suitable for Radiofrequency (RF) treatments?

  • If you have active skin disease or infection in the area treated.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If you have an electrical device in your body e.g. pacemakers.

How should I prepare for a Radiofrequency (RF) treatment?

Avoid doing anything that will irritate your skin immediately before treatment (e.g. sunbathing). Some women find that their skin is more sensitive right before and during their menstrual cycle, therefore ladies: please take this into consideration when scheduling your treatment appointment.

What should you do after a Radiofrequency (RF) treatment?

Generally, no special care is needed after treatment. However it is good to increase the application of moisturizing lotions or creams to the treatment area. Use a hydrating mask as often as you feel is necessary.
