Fillers - Juvéderm

What is it?

Juvéderm is a transparent injectable gel dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid that helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away wrinkles and facial folds. Juvéderm is appropriate for any area of the face, including lines and creases around the mouth, nose, eyes and forehead. It can also be used for facial contouring as well as to improve the appearance of scars, such as those caused by acne, or to enhance the size and shape of the lips.

What is hyaluronic acid, and how does it work?

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human body and is central to regulating volume and elasticity in the skin. For over 20 years, it has successfully been used to treat various medical conditions, including problems of the eyes and arthritic joints.

The hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm has been modified to last longer than the hyaluronic acid that is naturally present in the body. It forms strong bonds with water molecules in the skin, prolonging its rejuvenating effects for six months or more.

Hyaluronic acid fillers work in two ways. First, they add volume and smooth away facial wrinkles, folds and sagging to restore a firmer, more youthful appearance. Second, they stop the breakdown of existing collagen, thereby slowing down the facial ageing process.

What type of Juvéderm treatments does IYAC offer?

Juvéderm comes in three formulations— Juvéderm Volbella®, Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Juvéderm Voluma® - to allow your treatment to be tailored to your unique needs.

  • Juvéderm Volbella® is used for the undereye area and lips.
  • Juvéderm Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds.
  • Juvéderm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.
  • Juvéderm Voluma® is better suited to larger scale facial volumising such as to the chin, cheeks, and cheekbones.

What makes Juvéderm different from other dermal fillers?

  • Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus are the only hyaluronic acid fillers that are FDA-approved to last up to one year. In addition, Juvéderm Voluma® lasts up to eighteen months. The unique manufacturing process provides a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid for long-lasting results. Juvéderm lasts more than three times as long as collagen fillers.
  • Juvéderm has a smooth consistency that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. The chances of unevenness and irregular contours are substantially decreased.
  • Juvéderm injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has been proven safe and effective in persons of color. Studies with Juvéderm showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects of Juvéderm include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching at the injection sites. Most of these will diminish within 48 hours with the exception of mild bruising which may take 2 to 10 days to gradually fade. Make-up is often sufficient to cover most mild bruising. There is also a rare chance of a granuloma, or tiny bumps, developing under the skin near the injection site.

Is it safe?

Juvéderm is a natural, biodegradable, FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is safe and effective in patients of all skin types and colors.

How should I prepare for a Juvéderm treatment?

No pre-testing is necessary, however prior to treatment it is recommended that patients avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or high doses of fish oil or vitamin E supplements to prevent an increased chance of bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, inform Dr Yeoh if you have occasional bouts of cold sores as medication to prevent a recurrence may be necessary.

Who is not suitable for Juvéderm treatments?

Women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Juvéderm. People with bleeding disorders, known allergies to gram positive bacteria, previous allergic reactions that required hospital treatment, or a history of keloid scarring treatment should also avoid Juvéderm injections.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Immediately following the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist from a few days to a week, at which time the lips will settle into a more natural state.

Are the treatments painful?

Besides a small prick, most people find the injections to be relatively painless. Ultrafine needles are used to decrease the discomfort experienced by the patient. If preferred, a topical anaesthetic can be applied to the treated areas prior to the procedure. When enhancing the lips, a local anaesthetic injection is often administered.

How fast will I see the results, and how long do they last?

You see the results immediately and the look continues to improve for 1 to 2 weeks following the treatment as Juvéderm softens and draws moisture into the treated area. Juvéderm is FDA-approved to last up to one year. The results last three times as long as collagen fillers.

How many syringes of Juvéderm do I need?

Most nasolabial folds will typically require two syringes to fully correct. One syringe of Juvéderm is sometimes sufficient for mild nasolabial folds. For lip augmentation, one syringe will sculpt and enhance the lips in a noticeable but subtle way. Two syringes will provide a more dramatic increase in size and enhancement.

If I had a laser treatment or chemical peel recently, can I still use Juvéderm?

It is recommended that you wait until recent cosmetic treatments totally heal, and the skin returns to its normal condition before undergoing Juvéderm injections. This normally occurs within 2 to 4 weeks of your last treatment.
