Revolumizer RX
Among the many options to fight aging the non-surgical way, which
one is the right one for you? We put the spotlight on Sculptra with the
first of a series of real-life patient case studies.
CASE #1
Patient concern
A 58-year-old caucasian lady consulted Dr Isabelle Yeoh about her face, which was sagging
and "falling down". She enquired about Thermage (a skin tightening procedure using
radiofrequency as the heat source) and wondered if it would help her. It was also important
that any procedure she embarked on had minimal downtime due to her busy work schedule.
Dr Yeoh's diagnosis
"On examination, her face
had moderate to severe
laxity. The main problem
was a loss of facial fat,
especially in the middle
and lower cheeks, which
was giving her a sunken
and hollow look. Skin |
tightening procedures
like Thermage, Titan and
Radiofrequency work
by heating up the fat in
the deep subcutaneous
layer of the face. As a
general rule, best results
from such treatments
are seen in those with |
mild laxity. I explained
that firstly, she was not a
good candidate for skin
tightening procedures.
Secondly, we would get
a better result if we
addressed the loss of
facial fat by filling up, or
volumizing her cheeks." |
Recommended treatment
The best anti-aging treatment for this patient is Sculptra.
Sculptra is an injectable, non-invasive, FDA-approved filler that
works differently from other fillers. Instead of being a wrinkle
filler, Sculptra has a volumizing and collagen-stimulating effect.
It replaces the volume loss on the face that is responsible for
the appearance of age.
Dr Yeoh also explained that the human face is made up of
individual fat compartments that age at different rates, so it is
crucial to restore volume to areas that are lacking. This explains
why certain people have an unnatural, windblown look after
undergoing a facelift, as this does not provide volume.
How Sculptra works
On a youthful face, the various fat compartments transition smoothly,
enabling skin to look smooth and taut.
Other Facts/Benefits
• Youth maintenance: Not just for
mature women whose faces are
already showing visible signs of
aging, Sculptra is also suitable
for women in their 30s who
want to maintain a pert and
youthful complexion.
• Natural rejuvenation: Results
are not immediate. Instead, a
gradual and natural volumizing
effect is created as your skin
starts to rebuild its own collagen
over a few months.
• Minimum fuss, maximum
returns: A treatment regime
comprises 3 to 4 injection
sessions, spaced 1 month apart.
Results last for 2 years.
As we age, facial contour changes occur and this results in sagging or hollowed
skin and wrinkles. Our faces are not so much 'falling'. Rather, they are deflating.
Using Sculptra to replace this fat loss helps restore the smooth contours and
the appearance of youth. In addition, Sculptra gives the skin an additional
brightening effect as it is made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid, part of the alphahydroxy
acid family also used in chemical peels.
Results and feedback
Our patient was treated with 5 vials of Sculptra over 3 sessions,
and was delighted with the results.

Headache alert
Do you know that headaches can be caused by
hormonal imbalance? A simple hormone test
could be all it takes to unravel the cause. Our
second case study shows you how.
CASE #2
Patient concern
A 45-year-old Asian lady recounted a history of migraine type
headaches that occurred daily for the past 10 years.
She had taken migraine medication for many years, but only
experienced partial relief. The headaches had recently become
worse and affected her quality of life. Despite having seen
many doctors of various specialties, they were unable to find
a cause as there were no identifiable triggers or patterns. She
led a healthy lifestyle, exercised regularly, and her annual
screening tests were normal.
Dr Yeoh's diagnosis and
treatment recommendations
"I suggested she check her hormonal levels. We
performed a blood test, which showed
estrogen
dominance. This means she had a lower level of
progesterone compared to estrogen. When estrogen
is not balanced with adequate
progesterone, it can
cause a host of symptoms like pre-menstrual weight
gain, headaches, fatigue and irritability. I prescribed
her natural progesterone cream, to be applied on day
14-28 of her menstrual cycle."

Results and feedback
In less than a month, the
headaches disappeared and
the patient was in tip-top
condition once again. She also
felt calmer, slept better and
enjoyed an increased sense of
overall well-being.
Suffering from persistent but
mysterious headaches?
Here's some advice from Dr Yeoh:
• Headaches are often your body's natural way of warning
you that something is out of balance.
• Start a headache diary to see if your triggers can be
established. Food and environmental allergies and
sensitivities can sometimes be triggers.
• If you are still plagued by chronic headaches although all
medical causes have been excluded and you are already
living a healthy lifestyle, you may wish to check your
hormonal levels.

You have heard (enough) about Botox® and its miracle effects. But just what is it
and how does it even out those creases? Here are the essential facts.
What is Botox®?
The Botox® that is used for injections for cosmetic purposes is Botulinum Toxin Type A, a
purified protein that has been proven to be an effective muscle relaxant.
What is Botox® used for?
Botox® is used in aesthetic medicine to treat moderate
to severe brow furrows, wrinkles and facial creases, as
well as to slim or create a more feminine jaw line. These
procedures use a small amount of diluted botulinum toxin
that enables controlled relaxation of muscles, giving the
recipient a clean, smooth facial appearance.
Botox® is also widely used for non-cosmetic medical
procedures, in order to treat cervical dystonia, heavy
sweating, chronic pain and migraines.
How does Botox®
work? Botox® relaxes
the muscles by blocking
nerve impulses. The
result is reduced facial
muscle contractions,
and so the wrinkles
relax and soften.
How is Botox® administered?
• Your doctor will first examine your ability to move certain facial muscles and
determine where you need it most.
• Numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes beforehand.
• Tiny injections of diluted amounts of Botox® are given to your facial muscles.
• The injection procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Discomfort is
usually minimal.
Concerned about an unnatural look?
If you are concerned that Botox® may cause
a 'frozen' look, be reassured that it does
not paralyse muscles or hinder your facial
expressions in experienced hands. In fact, when
Botox® is used in an artistic way, the result will
be a restored youthful appearance.
Dr. Isabelle Yeoh explains: "Botox treatments give
almost immediate results and instant gratification,
without surgery. The fact that they give safe,
consistent and reproducible results explains
their popularity. Most people resume their usual
activities on the same day."
What are the benefits?
• Cost-effective.
• Quick results.
• Reducing frown lines, crow's feet
and wrinkles, to give a rested
appearance.
• Non-invasive.
• No downtime. While
needle marks may be
visible immediately after
administration, it usually
resolves within 24 hours.
• Botox® is not permanent. If
you decide to stop having it,
your face will resume its normal
appearance within three to six
months.
