Water retention
Water retention doesn't just make you feel bloated and
lethargic, it also has an impact on your skin health and weight
management. Here's more on the causes of water retention
and how you can prevent it to restore overall wellness.
What is water retention?
Known as edema medically, it a condition whereby water leaks
into the body tissues from the bloodstream. When you're in good
health, this excess fluid is drained from the body tissues through the
lymphatic system. When your body isn't in tiptop shape, water is
retained and causes swelling.
How common is it?
It is fairly common for healthy adults to experience
slight weight fluctuations on a daily basis due to water
retention. While most people can retain up to 2kg of
"hidden" water weight, those who are overweight or
suffer from obesity may retain up to 5kg. Premenstrual
water retention is also common, and is caused by the
hormonal changes in a woman's menstrual cycle.
How do I tell I have the condition?
Apart from weight gain, water retention may
manifest as swollen ankles, feet, wrists and arms,
and bloatedness in the abdomen. Since it may be
a symptom of serious illness, consulting a doctor
to find the cause is important.
