Fillers - Restylane

What is it?

Restylane is the world's most popular and most studied cosmetic dermal filler. It is a transparent gel made of purified hyaluronic acid that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane is often used to fill the lines between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), but it also safely and effectively treats wrinkles and sagging occurring around the eyebrows, tear trough, cheeks, mouth and jaw line.

What is hyaluronic acid, and how does it work?

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human body and is central to regulating volume and elasticity in the skin. For over 20 years, it has successfully been used to treat various medical conditions, including problems of the eyes and arthritic joints.

The hyaluronic acid in Restylane has been modified to last longer than the hyaluronic acid that is naturally present in the body. It forms strong bonds with water molecules in the skin, prolonging its rejuvenating effects for six months or more.

Hyaluronic acid fillers work in two ways. First, they add volume and smooth away facial wrinkles, folds and sagging to restore a firmer, more youthful appearance. Second, they stop the breakdown of existing collagen, thereby slowing down the facial ageing process.

How is Restylane different from other treatments?

  • Fills in wrinkles while also lifting the skin and slowing the loss of collagen
  • Unlike many other cosmetic dermal fillers, Restylane is not derived from animal origins.
  • Results are immediate - no surgery is required and downtime is minimal
  • Does not affect facial expression
  • Products are tailored according to individual needs
  • Restylane has an intermediate gel particle size that makes it suitable for moderate wrinkles and lip enhancement. It is recommended that it is injected into the middle part of the dermis.
  • Perlane has a larger gel particle size and is used for deep lines, facial contouring, and lip enhancement. It is injected deeply into the dermis to treat nasolabial folds and marionette lines as well as augment the cheek, chin and nose
  • Restylane SubQ has the largest gel particle size in the range and is used to replace fat loss in the face and create or restore a more defined facial contour. It is ideal for individuals who have hollowing of the cheeks and mid-face
  • Restylane Skinboosters offers a distinctive 4-in-1 concept that hydrates and stimulates collagen production in the skin, while also shrinking pores and restoring luminosity to the complexion. For more information, click here.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects of Restylane include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching at the injection sites. Most of these will diminish within 48 hours with the exception of mild bruising which may take 2 to 10 days to gradually fade. Make-up is often sufficient to cover most mild bruising. Is it safe?

More than 10 million treatments and 100 clinical studies make Restylane one of the most tried and tested dermal fillers on the market. It has been FDA-approved since 2003.

How should I prepare for a Restylane treatment?

No pre-testing is necessary, however prior to treatment it is recommended that patients avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, high doses of fish oil or vitamin E supplements to prevent an increased chance of bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, inform Dr Yeoh if you have occasional bouts of cold sores as medication to prevent a reoccurrence may be necessary.

Who is not suitable for Restylane treatments?

Women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Restylane. People with bleeding disorders, known allergies to gram positive bacteria, previous allergic reactions that required hospital treatment, or a history of keloid scarring should also avoid Restylane injections.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Immediately following the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days.

Are the treatments painful?

Besides a small prick, most people find the injections to be relatively tolerable. Ultrafine needles are used to decrease the discomfort experienced by the patient. When enhancing the lips, a local anaesthetic injection is often administered.

How fast will I see the results, and how long do they last?

You will see immediate results, and continuous improvements will be apparent for months following the treatment. Results last for approximately 6 to 9 months. With one touch up treatment, Restylane treatments may last up to 12 months.

If I had a laser treatment or chemical peel recently, can I still use Restylane?

It is recommended that you wait until recent cosmetic treatments totally heal, and the skin returns to its normal condition before undergoing Restylane injections. This normally occurs within 2 to 4 weeks of your last treatment.
