IPL for Skin Rejuvenation

What is it?

IPL skin rejuvenation, also known as photorejuvenation, is a non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate and encourage healing and regeneration of the skin through the application of a broad-spectrum light.

Treatments using IPL, which stands for " intense pulsed light," improve the skin color and texture through safe light energy. It is mainly used to target unwanted discolouration of the skin, such age spots, freckles, melasma, visible veins and other conditions.

How is IPL skin rejuvenation different from other treatments?

Unlike chemical peeling, laser resurfacing and dermabrasion, IPL skin rejuvenation does not involve removal of the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) or the deeper dermis.

For that reason, IPL skin rejuvenation does not require an extended recuperation period of several days to weeks. In effect, it is a "no downtime" procedure meaning that you may immediately return to your normal daily activities.

How does it work?

Dark structures (whether clothing or skin imperfections) absorb white light, converting it to heat. White structures reflect the light away. By the same principle, IPL treatments target and heat dark, pigmented cells, causing them to eventually shed.

By targeting the dermis, it "tricks" the lower level of the skin into thinking it has suffered a minor injury, which stimulates rebuilding processes to begin. And since only darker pigmentation is targeted, IPL treatments are uniquely effective at specifically treating pigmented skin spots whilst preserving the rest of your skin.

Red blood vessels are treated by including green and yellow light in the IPL treatments. Red blood cells absorb this light, enabling broken capillaries to be treated without damaging your skin. Meanwhile, some of the longer wavelengths in the IPL light penetrate deeply to stimulate fibroblasts to produce extra collagen.

As a result, a later appearing benefit (often months after treatment) is a visible improvement in skin texture and a reduction in fine lines due to the stimulation of new collagen in the dermis.

Are IPL treatments suitable for me?

Any man or woman who shows the signs of aged and sun-damaged skin is a candidate for IPL skin treatments. This procedure is ideal for those that desire:

  • Diminishment of visible skin discolourations, such as age spots, sun-induced freckles, irregular pigmentation, melasma, symptoms of rosacea, birthmarks, unsightly veins, acne scarring and other blemishes
  • Improvement of skin tone, texture, fine lines and pore size
  • Little discomfort
  • Immediate return to routine activities
  • Gradual, natural-looking improvement

What areas of the body can be treated?

The areas of skin that will benefit the most are generally those parts that have been exposed to the sun. The most commonly treated areas include the face, neck, chest and backs of the hands.

Is it safe? What are the possible side effects?

Yes. IPL skin rejuvenation does not emit any ultraviolet or other harmful rays. The most common side effects — redness and minor swelling — usually go away within a few hours to a few days after treatment.

What happens during the treatment?

A cold gel is applied to lubricate and cool the skin, and protective goggles are placed over the eyes. The IPL wand is brought to the skin and pulses of light are applied. You will experience a slight sensation as the pulses of therapeutic light pass over your skin. While pain is an individual matter, most people tolerate the light treatment well and describe the sensation as a rubber band snap to the skin. The majority of patients require no anaesthesia, though a topical anaesthetic is available for patients that desire it.

How long does each treatment last?

Each treatment session is about 45 minutes. This includes microdermabrasion followed by gentle extractions, 15 minutes of IPL treatment, followed by a Gentlewaves®LED treatment immediately after to improve the skin's healing process.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after treatment your skin may be pink and slightly swollen for a few hours or longer. Pigmented spots will darken at first and will remain dark for a few days before being shed from the skin's surface. You can immediately resume all activities and all usual skin care products. But avoid any products that may irritate the skin until all signs of redness fade.

Who is not suitable for IPL treatments?

Anyone that is sensitive to light may want to avoid IPL treatments. Also, tanned skin should not be treateed, although a slight "chronic" tan may be acceptable. Dr Yeoh will assess your skin at the time of your consultation.

How fast will I see the results, and how many follow-up treatments are recommended?

Improvements are gradual and become more visible after each treatment. Results in skin color can be observed within weeks while changes in texture may not become apparent until months after a series of treatments. It has been demonstrated that the majority of people will achieve optimal results after 6 treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments can be done once every 2 months.

How can I prolong the results for as long as possible?

It is important to keep in mind that sunscreen is vital to ensuring the results of the procedure last as long as possible. Because sunlight is the most common cause of many of the problems that we are attempting to improve through the IPL treatments, a sunscreen should be an integral part of your daily skincare regimen.

Be sure to protect the treated area from the sun for at least a couple of weeks, either by covering the area or wearing strong sunscreen. If the proper steps are taken to maintain the improvements, the results of your treatment may last for years.
