Laser for Acne (Dual Yellow Laser)

What is it?

Dual Yellow Laser is a copper bromide laser that helps to reduce acne, melasma, redness and sensitivity. With just 3-6 treatments at 2-3 week intervals, this laser treatment aims for maximum benefits with minimal discomfort and side effects.

How does it work?

The yellow light from this gentle laser destroys acne bacteria thereby eradicating active acne, at the same time promoting collagen growth, reducing redness and improving sensitive skin. Improvements are gradual and produce clearer and more even-toned surface and and an overall youthful appearance.

Is the Dual Yellow Laser right for me?

Dual Yellow Laser is an ideal treatment for those who have:

  • Acne (mild to moderate acne that has not responded well to topical creams or oral medication)
  • Melasma (a type of pigment that is caused partly by sun, genetic predisposition, and hormonal changes)
  • Redness-prone skin
  • Sensitive skin

Is it safe? What are the possible side effects?

Dual Yellow Laser is very safe because the laser does not injure the outermost layer of the skin. Side effects are minimal and may include redness and mild swelling. Most of these will disappear within hours of the treatment.

What happens during the treatment?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and laser-protective goggles are placed over the eyes. A topical anaesthesia can be used if the patient so desires. A yellow laser beam is directed at the face, which destroys the Propionibacterium acne bacteria and shrinks the sebaceous gland to reduce the production of sebum. The yellow light also promotes collagen growth and reduces small red blood vessels (facial capillaries). This has an overall tightening, firming and rejuvenating effect on skin.

How long does each treatment session last?

Each treatment session is about 45 minutes. This includes microdermabrasion followed by gentle extractions, 15 minutes of laser treatment, followed by a Gentlewaves®LED treatment immediately after to improve the skin's healing process.

Is it painful?

Most patients compare the feel of the laser to a tingling or prickling sensation like pins and needles. Generally, Dual Yellow Laser is very well tolerated without anaesthesia, even in those with very low pain thresholds. However, a topical anaesthesia may be used for patients that request it.

What can I expect after a treatment?

After a laser session, the affected area might appear pink for up to an hour, but since there is no wound or injury to the skin, makeup can be applied straight away. Patients can immediately resume their regular daily activities since there is no healing time required.

Who is not suitable for Dual Yellow Laser?

Although Dual Yellow Laser treatments can be used effectively on darker skin, individuals with darker skin tones should be assessed for suitability beforehand.

How do I prepare my skin for laser treatments?

Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before the treatment. Avoid the use of Retin A or other irritating skin products for three days prior to the treatment.

How fast will I see the results, and how many treatments will I need?

Improvements are gradual and become more visible after each treatment. Expect clearer and healthy-looking skin that is clearer and tighter. For best results, 6 treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart is recommended. Thereafter, maintenance treatments can be done once every 2 months.

What other treatments do you recommend for acne?

Chemical peels are a simple and effective way to achieve cleaner and clearer-looking skin. Most individuals have minimal recovery time and are able to continue their usual activities after the chemical peel. Chemical peels can be done every 3-4 months on its own, or together with the Dual Yellow Laser treatments for more significant results.

Pearl laser, a laser peel that removes a layer of old damaged skin to reveal smooth, even-toned skin, is an effective option to stabilize those with sensitive skin that is dry on the surface, and oily & congested underneath. This treatment has a pore-stabilizing effect on acne-prone skin that is sensitive. There is a 5 day recovery time during which the skin looks mildly sunburnt. Most individuals need only 1treatment for visibly significant results.

How else can I care for my skin after treatment?

Having a good skincare regime is necessary for maintaining healthy clear skin. IYAC offers a comprehensive range of skincare products and cosmetics suitable for acne-prone skin. A salicylic acid-based cleanser to reduce surface dead skin, and a good moisturizer is a must for pimples to heal and marks to fade off quickly.

Choose mineral makeup like Jane Iredale's mineral makeup which is lightweight with coverage for red marks, does not clog pores and is good for your skin.

A healthy digestive system is key for well-being. Most acne-prone individuals benefit from minimizing sugar, dairy and wheat in their daily diet, and taking a probiotic supplement to promote great skin from within.
