Ask the Doctor: what’s the difference between Skinboosters and Rejuran?

Q: What’s the difference between Skinboosters and Rejuran? How do I choose the right one for me?

Dr Chung: Skinboosters are small drops of hyaluronic acid injected into the deeper layers of the skin. The droplets draw surrounding water into the skin, which hydrates it. As we often say, it’s like wearing a good moisturizer beneath the skin for the next six months.

Rejuran is injected into the same skin layers as Skinboosters. But as a DNA protein, it kickstarts the body’s natural repair process, which strengthens and stabilizes the skin. Effects are gradual and cumulative, with results best seen after 3-4 monthly sessions. Expect healthier skin, with improvement in redness, sensitivity, pores and fine lines. Rejuran also just launched Rejuran I and S, with I more suited for the undereye area, and S for filling depressed acne scars.

As for choosing the right one for you, here’s a guide:

  • Try Skinboosters if you are looking for a quick fix for dry skin and less downtime. Downtime is minimal, with swelling usually subsiding by the time you leave the clinic, and needle marks that mostly settle within 3 to 5 days. You can easily camouflage these marks with light makeup.
  • Go for Rejuran if your skin is troubled by redness and sensitivity (think acne, eczema and the like) or if you are looking for overall skin rejuvenation. Downtime is slightly longer. The treated areas will be bumpy for 1-2 days, but those bumps simply mean that the skin cells have been activated. Makeup can be applied the next day.

Another question I’m asked is whether you can use Skinboosters and Rejuran together. Of course, you can! But each treatment should be done on a separate day. For severely dehydrated skin, I suggest starting with Skinboosters and then waiting two weeks before a Rejuran treatment.

Similarly, you can combine Rejuran with other treatments, too. Here are some examples:
- Agnes Eye can be combined with Rejuran on the same day for quicker healing and better results.
- Depressed acne scars can be treated with subcision, BB Laser and Rejuran in an order that suits the downtime your schedule can accommodate.
