4 ways to tweak your skincare for preventing and treating maskne

4 ways to tweak your skincare

Now that we know how the skin’s barrier suffers from mask wearing, the key to overcoming maskne is to strengthen and repair it by keeping it well-moisturized, hydrated and protected. Just using the right skincare products can make a significant difference in healing and preventing mask-related skin issues.

1. Provide the skin with calming soothing nutrients and use a layering technique that helps your skin to heal quickly overnight, while keeping your complexion youthful and supple at the same time.

  • After cleansing, use a toner containing hyaluronic acid for hydration and skin repair. All skin types including acne-prone skin would benefit from doing this.

         - If your skin is dry and sensitive, add a face oil containing jojoba and squalene to your toner. This creates a moisture sealant, soothes irritated and dry skin, and gives additional healing and repair effects.
         - If you are breakout prone, skip the oil and use a lightweight serum containing tea tree or niacinamide instead.

  • Follow with an overnight hydrating gel mask for a quick (and convenient) revival, as well as keeping your complexion youthful and supple.
  • Finish with a recovery moisturizer as your last step. Pick one with healing ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, calendula, beta glucan and bisabolol. These ingredients will repair the skin barrier and reverse damage, prevent sensitivity and irritation, and restore skin to a healthy and youthful state.
  • Do not forget your sunscreen! Proper sun protection helps to protect your skin against photoaging, which may appear as dark spots, sagging skin and wrinkles.
  • Putting aside 20-minutes to pamper yourself with a sheet mask daily will also keep the skin well-hydrated and stabilized.

2. Avoid products that can cause or aggravate sensitive/acne-prone skin

Avoid heavy makeup like foundation and concealer to prevent further occlusion. If you must wear makeup, choose mineral makeup that is non-comedogenic which is safer for acne and sensitive skin.

Harsh exfoliants (e.g. coarse scrubs, wash cloths, sonic cleansing brushes, razor blades) and products containing irritants (e.g. fragrance, alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol), can further damage the skin barrier. Physical exfoliants can be swapped with gentler alternatives such as IYAC's Almond Exfoliant. Actively reading product labels and switching to clean, irritant-free skincare is beneficial for your skin in the long run, not just for tiding over the maskne season.

3. Minimizing irritation from medicated creams and/or switching to gentler alternatives

Medicated creams tend to be more irritating to the skin due to the nature of how they work. One can minimize irritation by reducing the frequency and strength of the ingredients, or by replacing them with gentler alternatives.

  • Salicylic acid, if kept to 2% or less, is safe and beneficial for keeping breakouts at bay and smoothening the pores.
  • Instead of benzoyl peroxide, use ingredients like tea tree oil or niacinamide.
  • For retinols, reduce the frequency from daily to twice/thrice a week, or replace retinol with vigna aconitifolia (a natural alternative to retinol that gives all the benefits of retinol without the dry skin side effects.)

4. Schedule yourself for your favourite facial regularly.

Treatments that focus on deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, hydration and protection of the skin barrier are ideal for overcoming maskne and creating beautiful skin. These can be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks.
