Pores

Botox in Singapore

Pores are small openings in our skin with essential functions. They allow us to sweat, and let our natural oil, also known as sebum, to come up to the skin’s surface, keeping our skin lubricated and healthy.

Since pores are an integral part of the skin, and everyone has pores, then what makes someone’s skin porcelain-like versus another with rougher skin, is the size of the pores. We all start life with tiny pores; you may have noticed that kids generally have smooth and clean skin, which all changes when their hormones kick in during their teenage years and pores become more obvious.

So, what causes larger pores? While genes, sex hormones, chronic recurrent acne, and skincare regime can affect pore size, the 2 major factors leading to increased pore size are:

1. Increased sebum (oily skin)

2. Decreased collagen and elasticity (aging, dry skin)

What can be done to address these issues to achieve smaller pores then?
Here are IYAC’s top 5 picks for pores, in increasing order of results.

Topicals

1. Retinoids

Topical retinoid or retinol, which are variations of vitamin A, do 2 things:

1. Increase skin cell turnover
2. Reduce sebum production.

This prevents clogging of pores, allowing pores to look smaller. Start with a lower concentration once to twice weekly at night, and increase to every other night as the skin gets used to the retinoid. Check with one of us doctors at IYAC if retinoid is suitable for your skin type.

Alternatively, try IYAC’s Muru Muru Recovery Cream. Suitable for all skin types, this lightweight yet moisturizing formula with a blend of Muru Muru seed butter (from the palm trees in the Amazon Rainforest), Moroccan Argan and Swiss Apple stem cells and retinaldehyde hydrate and revitalize the skin, refining pores for smoother and cleaner skin.

2. Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a controlled application of either an AHA (alpha-hydroxy-acid) or a BHA (beta-hydroxy-acid) to remove the surface built-up of dead skin cells to reveal new and regenerated skin. AHA and BHA also help to stimulate collagen production and organisation, lending support to pores. When chemical peels are repeated at regular intervals through the year (1-2 months for a mild peel, 4-6 months for a medium peel), the skin becomes firmer, with softened wrinkles and smaller pores.

Suitable for those looking for sure but gradual pore improvements, with subtle downtime.

Price:

$350 for a single session. $1260 for 4 sessions. All prices are subject to 7% GST.

3. BB Laser

The 1927nm Thulium laser, also known as the BB Laser, is a sub-ablative skin resurfacing and rejuvenation laser. This laser peel not only targets superficial pigments and blemishes, but also stimulates collagen formation, allowing pores to look more refined with the skin more lifted. Results are visible in as early as 2 weeks and skin continues to improve for 1-2 months after. Have regular sessions spaced 3-4 months apart for cleaner, brighter and more refined skin, just like you are wearing BB (blemish balm) cream, except that you aren’t. This treatment is best done 2-3 weeks before any to-look-good occasion.

Suitable for those seeking visible results, without needles.

Price:

$800 for a single session. $2160 for 3 sessions. All prices are subject to 7% GST.

4. Botox + Hydration Drops

Two of the 3 injectables that we may use to help shrink pores are botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) and hyaluronic acid (hydration drops).

You may be more familiar with the Botox that is injected into the muscles to help soften wrinkles. But do you know that even tinier doses of Botox can be injected superficially into the skin to target the oil and sweat glands? With less active oil and sweat glands, pores will naturally look smaller.

Hydration drops reintroduces micro-droplets of hyaluronic acid (a natural lubricant) back into the skin. Hyaluronic acid draws in water, hydrating the skin inside out. When the skin is better hydrated, oil glands become less active as there is less need to counter skin dryness, and hence pores will look smaller. This is available as Skinboosters or Profhilo.

When Botox is combined with Skinboosters or Profhilo in the same session, you get a treatment that immediately hydrates the skin while tightening the pores. Two to 3 monthly treatments are required for optimal and longer-lasting results, and maintenance treatments can be scheduled every 6 to 9 months.

This combination treatment is best suited for those with underlying dry skin with large pores.

Price:

Combination treatment from $2500 per session. All prices are subject to 7% GST.

5. Rejuran

For those with oily, sensitive or blemish-prone (acne, eczema) skin, Rejuran may be the key you need. Rejuran treatment uses bio-compatible polynucleotide (PN), essentially salmon DNA, to carry out important healing and repair functions within the skin, improving the skin’s foundation. With improved collagen and elastin in the skin, the skin becomes more resilient and better hydrated with less obvious pores. The benefits are cumulative. It is recommended to start with 3 to 4 monthly sessions, followed by a maintenance session every 6 months.

Suitable for those who wish to refine pores while improving the fundamentals of their skin.

Price:

Single session from $750. All prices are subject to 7% GST.
