Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

What are hyaluronic acid fillers?

In medical aesthetics, fillers are a popular treatment that are commonly used to fill wrinkles in the skin, add volume to the lips and areas under the eyes, and enhance facial contours by plumping and lifting the cheeks, chin, jawline and temples.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are particularly popular. People feel comfortable knowing that hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance found in our skin, connective, nerve and epithelial tissues. It’s also found in countless beauty products due to its ability to boost hydration, prevent moisture loss, seal in dewiness and plump up the skin. It has a low rate of allergic reaction. It’s so mild it’s even found in many brands of moistening eye drops.

How do hyaluronic acid fillers work?

Our bodies naturally produce and break down hyaluronic acid in a continuous cycle. The ageing process slows this down which causes skin to be less hydrated and plump.

When hyaluronic acid filler is injected into the skin, it adds volume to the skin, while attracting water molecules that improve the skin’s hydration and further boost lost volume. It also stimulates the production of natural collagen.

So what exactly can hyaluronic acid fillers do?

They can create:
  • Beautiful, Soft Eyes
By injecting Botox directly into the skin (and not muscle), pores contract and reduce in size causing the surface area of the skin to tighten. The result is a lifting effect that lasts for months – like a non-surgical facelift effect. Additionally, injecting intradermal Botox into the lower part of the face close to the jawline cancels some of the downward pull of the platysma muscle, conveying a lifting effect to the cheeks and jowls.
  • Fuller Lips
Hyaluronic acid fillers also can also be used to plump lips, creating soft and supple volume with natural-looking results. Additionally, hyaluronic acid fillers continue to attract water molecules after injection – giving lips a fresh, luscious feel that no other type of filler can provide.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Minimal advance preparation is required, though we recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements five days before the treatment (to avoid/reduce bruising). After treatment, try to minimise contact with treated areas within the first eight hours. Also steer clear of contact with extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) during that time.

What can I expect after the treatment?

This is a non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime (for most people). There are no bandages or major restrictions on typical, daily activities after completion of the treatment.

What will I see results?

Unlike some types of fillers which may take a while before the effects become apparent, hyaluronic acid fillers produce visible results when the procedure is finished. What’s more, the injection of hyaluronic acid fillers can stimulate the natural production of collagen – over time, less filler is needed to attain the same results.

And the results will last a long time, from six months to a few years – depending on the individual and several factors such as the targeted area and a person’s lifestyle, skin type and age.

Are hyaluronic acid fillers safe?

Being a natural-occurring substance in the body, hyaluronic acid fillers are biodegradable and allergic reactions are uncommon. Side effects, if any, include swelling and redness, soreness and minor bruising. The treated area may also develop tiny bumps, but it is a problem that will disappear over time.

Patients can be assured that all fillers offered by IYAC are FDA-approved, having undergone rigorous testing in clinical trials. Hyaluronic acid is widely used in the medical world, being the same substance used to treat burns and arthritic joints. In addition, over 20 million treatments using hyaluronic acid fillers for aesthetic purposes have been carried out worldwide.

Is the treatment reversible?

One of the benefit to choosing hyaluronic acid fillers is that the treatment can be reversed (if desired). The hyaluronic acid filler can be safely dissolved using the enzyme hyaluronidase, and the by-products are easily absorbed by the body without any harmful effects. Note: no other types of fillers can be reversed.
