What is it?

The accepted method of eliminating spider veins is laser treatment. Laser vein removal is an easy, fast, and non-invasive treatment that uses a mild laser to diminish the visibility of broken capillaries and spider veins. Since these problems lie just beneath the skin's surface, a laser light can penetrate through the skin to effectively treat vein discolourations without the need to cut into or injure surrounding skin. Laser vein treatments are a simple and effective way to eliminate unsightly veins without interrupting your daily life schedule.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are those small red, blue and purple blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and thighs. They often appear in "starburst" clusters, web-like mazes or patterns that look like spiders, hence explaining the name. Millions of men and women are afflicted with spider veins.

How does it work?

During laser therapy, a series of brief pulses of light energy is delivered through a small laser hand piece into a targeted vein. Laser treatments allow the delivery of a specific dosage of energy to each blood vessel. The light energy is absorbed by the lining of the blood vessels and the blood within the blood vessels. The heat generated causes a coagulation (clotting) of the blood, which effectively seals the veins off. Over a period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears.

Are laser treatments right for me?

All skin types are suitable for laser spider vein treatment. Laser therapy is effective for very small spider veins, but not larger varicose veins. If you are concerned about visible blood vessels around the nose, IYAC offers the Nd:YAG laser which is particularly effective to treat these vessels.

What are the benefits of using laser therapy over other treatments to eliminate spider veins?

Advances in technology allow the laser to use a focused beam of light to target the pigment in the vein. The laser beam is controlled and does not damage or injure the nearby skin tissue.

Is it safe? What are the possible side effects?

Laser therapy is safe because it does not involve cutting, physical insertion of any instrument, or harsh chemical applications to the skin. Side effects are generally mild and may include redness (which generally disappears in a few days) or a bruised or scabbed appearance (which may take a week to disappear).

What happens during the treatment?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and laser-protective goggles are placed over the eyes. A topical anaesthesia can be used if the patient so desires. The skin is then slathered with a special gel substance to facilitate the movement of the device over the skin and improve conductivity of the laser energy. An invisible laser beam is directed at the face, which heats up veins in the outermost layers of the skin. The laser has a cool air blower to minimise any discomfort to the skin. Afterwards, a cooling preparation is applied to further reduce discomfort.

How long does the treatment last?

Each treatment session is about 20 minutes. This includes 10 minutes of laser treatment, followed by an LED treatment immediately after to improve the skin's healing process.

Is it painful?

Most patients compare the feel of the laser to little ant bites or the snap of a rubber band against the skin. Generally, laser treatments are very well tolerated without anaesthesia, even in those with very low pain thresholds. However, a topical anaesthesia may be used for patients that request it.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Patients are encouraged to resume all normal activities immediately. There is no downtime or interruption in your daily activities associated with laser treatments.

Who is not suitable for laser treatments?

Although laser treatments can be used effectively on darker skin, individuals with darker skin tones should be assessed for suitability beforehand.

How should I prepare for a laser treatment?

Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before the treatment. Avoid the use of Retin A or other irritating skin products for three days prior to the treatment.

How fast will I see the results, and how many treatments will I need?

Improvements are gradual and become more visible after each treatment. The majority of the treated spider veins will disappear within 3-6 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart. If new veins appear, additional treatments are required for optimum results. Final results may not be apparent for several months. Most patients are satisfied by the results in a very short time.
