What are the benefits of a chemical peel?
Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck or hands in order to:
– Improve the appearance of wrinkles caused by sun damage, ageing and hereditary factors
– Improve the appearance of acne and acne scarring
– Decrease pore size
– Reduce age spots, freckles and dark patches due to pregnancy or birth control pills (melasma)

What can I expect during the treatment?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove excess oil. A peeling solution is applied to the whole face for about 2-10 minutes, then neutralised with a soothing cream. During the procedure, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation with a mild stinging sensation that lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. This fades away as the chemical peel is neutralised. A healing and soothing cream is prescribed for 7 days.
Does a chemical peel have any side effects?
Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to a sunburn occurs following the procedure. Peeling, redness, and scaling can result but will fade within 3 to 7 days.
For deeper peels, mild flaking of the skin begins 3 days later and continues to peel for a few days afterwards. Prior to treatment, it is important for a patient to inform the physician of any past history of keloid (scar tissue overgrowth) or unusual scarring tendencies, as well as any history of recurring cold sores.
Peel Precaution!
The new skin that emerges following a chemical peel is temporarily more sensitive to the sun. It is important to avoid direct sun exposure after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to the sun’s rays.
How long is the recovery period after a chemical peel?
The recovery time after a chemical peel depends on the type of peel administered, because each type of peel affects the skin to a different degree.
– Light chemical peels require virtually no recovery time. Though the skin may be mildly irritated after the peel, patients can return to their daily activities immediately after treatment.
– Medium chemical peels: A new layer of skin appears 3 to 7 days after treatment, and the skin will be fully healed in about two weeks.
How often should I receive subsequent treatments?
Mild peels may be repeated at 2 to 3 month intervals until the desired clinical effect is achieved. Deeper peels may be repeated every 6 to 12 months, if necessary.
How do I prepare for a chemical peel?
Prior to the chemical peel treatment, stop using exfoliating agents such as tretinoin/retinols, glycolic acid or scrubs for 5 days beforehand. After the chemical peel, it’s important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.
