A Subtle Non-Surgical Face Lift Using Botulinum Toxin: 5 Things to Know

Botulinum toxin is widely known for softening wrinkles such as forehead lines and crow’s feet. However, when used strategically, it may also help refine the facial outline, jawline contour, and neck profile.

At IYAC, botulinum toxin treatments are not limited to traditional wrinkle areas. In selected cases, small, carefully diluted amounts may also be placed at precise points along the lower face and jawline, just beneath the skin. This technique is designed to gently influence how certain facial muscles pull over time, which may help support a more refined facial outline while maintaining natural expression.

Here are five things to know about this approach.

1. A “Frozen” Look Is Not the Goal

A common concern with botulinum toxin is the risk of appearing stiff or unnatural. In practice, this appearance is usually associated with excess dosing or poorly planned injections, rather than the treatment itself.

When used appropriately:

  • Facial expressions remain natural
  • The face continues to move normally
  • The result does not appear puffy or overly stiff

Botulinum toxin works by temporarily relaxing selected muscles, not by adding volume. The aim is to soften excessive muscle activity while preserving natural facial movement.

2. Botulinum Toxin Can Also Help Refine the Facial Outline

Most people associate botulinum toxin with the upper face. However, muscles along the lower face and jawline also influence overall facial shape.

Stronger chewing muscles can sometimes make the lower face appear broader, and other muscles may gradually pull the corners of the mouth or jawline downward. By relaxing selected areas, treatment may help:

  • Refine the jawline contour
  • Reduce excessive muscle bulk along the jaw
  • Improve overall facial balance

Together, these changes can create the visual impression of a slimmer and more tapered facial outline.

3. It Works by Softening Downward Pull in the Lower Face

Several muscles around the jawline and neck influence how the lower face sits over time. For example:

  • The masseter muscles at the angle of the jaw can contribute to a broader lower face when enlarged.
  • Small muscles around the mouth may pull the corners of the lips downward.
  • The platysma muscle in the neck can create downward tension along the jawline.

Strategic placement of botulinum toxin may soften these downward forces. When this tension is reduced, the muscles that naturally lift the face can become more dominant, which can help improve the appearance of jawline definition and overall facial balance. At the same time, this approach may subtly soften features such as mild nasolabial folds and a slight downward turn of the corners of the mouth, creating a more refreshed and harmonious lower-face appearance.

In some cases, injections placed along the jawline and neck are described as a Nefertiti-style neck lift, where relaxing the platysma helps support the contour between the jaw and neck.

4. Think of It Like Anchoring a Tent

A helpful way to visualise this technique is to imagine a tent that has begun to sag slightly. If small pins are placed along strategic points around the edges, the fabric becomes more evenly supported and appears lifted.

Similarly, placing small amounts of botulinum toxin at selected points along the facial outline can reduce downward muscle pull. This allows the surrounding tissues to appear slightly more supported. Rather than physically lifting tissue like surgery, the treatment adjusts the balance of muscular forces, creating a subtle lifting effect.

5. Plan Treatment 2–3 Weeks Before Important Events

Results from botulinum toxin develop gradually as the treated muscles relax. Most individuals begin to notice changes within 1 to 2 weeks, with the effects continuing to settle during this time. For this reason, treatment is often best performed about 2 to 3 weeks before an important occasion, when individuals may wish to look refreshed.

The effects typically last around 3 to 6 months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and repeat treatment may be considered if desired.

A Subtle Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

Non-surgical treatments today are increasingly focused on natural-looking improvements rather than dramatic changes. When used thoughtfully, botulinum toxin may help:

  • Soften dynamic wrinkles
  • Refine the jawline and lower face contour
  • Reduce downward pull from selected facial and neck muscles

For individuals already considering treatment for facial lines, strategic placement along the facial outline and neck can also contribute to a gentle lifting and contouring effect, helping them look refreshed while maintaining natural facial expression.
