Botox in Singapore
What is Botox?
Botox is a natural, purified protein that was initially developed as a way to treat eye problems like excessive blinking and strabismus. It quickly developed a reputation in the cosmetic world when it was discovered to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. But that was only the beginning. New uses are being discovered with increasing frequency. In fact, in 2017, Time Magazine wrote a cover story entitled “How Botox Became the Drug That’s Treating Everything”. Today doctors are using Botox for everything from migraines to depression, and it remains one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic techniques on the market today.
How does it work?
Botox causes controlled weakening of specific muscles by blocking signals between nerves and muscles. The injected muscle no longer contracts, causing the overlying skin to relax and soften as well. New lines are also prevented from forming. More recently, Botox is also being injected into the skin, rather than the muscles, to stimulate collagen growth.
What areas can be treated?
The most popular areas to use Botox for cosmetic enhancement include:
- Wrinkles and lines – to smooth the skin on the forehead, brow area and eye area and prevent new wrinkles from forming
- Jaw slimming – to slim the jawline by reducing the size of the jaw muscles, resulting in a more feminine oval face shape
- Jaw sagging – to lift and tighten loose skin in the lower face that begins to drop due to gravity and long-term high-impact sports activity
- Neck – to reduce horizontal and vertical lines in the neck
- Entire face i.e. a Botox Facelift – to stimulate collagen for an lifting and tightening effect all over the whole face
Are Botox injections painful?
A small amount of Botox is directly injected into select muscles using a very fine needle. Generally, the treatment is quick and well tolerated. Most patients feel a series of quick stings but discomfort is minimal and brief. Anaesthetic cream can be used to reduce discomfort.
How long do the result last?
It depends on the area of the face and neck that is treated and the method that is used. Results for Botox to treat wrinkles and lines lasts between three to six months before lines slowly begin to return. It usually takes longer for the results of jaw remodeling to take effect, however, these results last an average of six months. After repeated Botox treatments, the treated muscles tend to atrophy so the effects last even longer.
Is Botox safe?
Botox was approved for cosmetic use by the US F.D.A in 2002. It has been widely tested and used safely for decades all around the world. Side effects are rare, but some people may experience temporary headaches, bruising or redness at the injection site. There is no downtime, and normal daily activities can be resumed immediately.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Botox. Also, Botox may not be suitable for patients with conditions that affect muscle activity, such as Bell's Palsy.
