Is Your Face Shape Changing?

Is Your Face Shape Changing?

Sep 13, 2021

You see your face every single day. Then why are you the last to know that your facial shape has changed? Faces change very gradually, which makes differences hard to detect. You know something is amiss, but what? Is it your hair? Diet? Skincare products? By the time you realize it’s your face shape, you may look quite different from your former self.

So how can we tell what’s going on? It’s as simple as grabbing some old photos.

Men don’t think they have baby faces at age 25, but most are surprised when they look back at photos to see soft, boyish jawlines during young adulthood. Conversely, women don’t remember their faces being pleasantly plump through the cheeks, forehead and temples. But in fact spry, buoyant young skin looks exactly like that.

How to tell if your is face changing shape? Here are five reasons:

1. Run a finger along your jawline. Does your finger glide smoothly or does the skin ripple? Lax skin in the lower face can change a V-shaped face into a soft O-shape.
2. Look in the mirror but don’t smile. Do you see resting lines between your nose and cheeks? Marionette lines can add unwanted heaviness to the frontal portion of the face.
3. Do you weigh more now than you used to? Most people do. Weight gain adds width to the cheeks and lower jaw, resulting in a boxier lower face.
4. Are you a night grinder? Teeth grinding bulks up masseter muscles in the lower jaw, which can square off your jawline.
5. Do you have any health issues or bad health habits? Poor sleep, stress and illness can cause water retention and dull, thin skin. Certain medications, such as steroids, can also add “facial bulkiness.”

If you realize that your once V-shaped face is now more of a square or triangle, there’s no reason to fret.

A procedure called a Microneedling radiofrequency (lower face tightening) can help treat the lower face. Radiofrequency energy delivered via tiny micro-needles melts unwanted fat around and under the jawline while stimulating collagen production in the overlying skin. The entire procedure takes about an hour. Results take 1 to 2 months as the jawline neatens up.
